  Section B

  Passage One

President is the title of the heads of many institution.

  In the United State

the heads of colleges and universities and of many business corporations

etc. are often given the title.

  Most important of all

it is the title of the head of the Federal Government.

The president's powers and duties are laid down by the Constitution

it states that the president should be elected for a term of four years

and that no president can hold office for more than two consecutive terms.

The president is also Commander-in-Chief of the armed force.

The relative power of president and Congress varies

and depends partly on the prseident himself

on the whole the president has become more important during the present centure

but the system of CHECK AND BALANCES provides a continuous struggle between president and Congress.

  11. What persons below are seldom given the title "President" in the United States?

12.According to the passage, how long can a president hold office consecutively at most?

  13. What can we infer from the passage?

  Passage Two

Elephants are perhaps the only animals that are hunted for their teeth.

Elephants' tusks, or very large teeth growing ones

on either side of their mouths are composed of a valuable material called ivory.

  An elephant uses its long

pointed tusks as tools for digging in the ground for foot

He also uses them as weapons in combat.

the tusks of male elephants are usually large and heavy.

In Africa, female elephants have long, light tusks

In India and other parts of Southern Asia

female elephants have small, short tusks or none at all.

Tusks in good condition are in great demand

and may sell for as high as two thousand dollars or more.

Because of this, large numbers of elephants have been killed.

Some countries have initiated methods of trying to protect elephants

  These have established elephant preserves

or areas of land set aside for herds of elephants where no one is allowed to harm them.

Elephants on the preserves are safe from ivory hunters.

  14. Which of the following is not true?

  15. What elephants are hunted more according to the passage?

  16. What is the passage mainly about?

  Passage Three

A cormorant is a large waterfowl that looks somewhat like a seagull

and has a long beak with a pouch

  or sack, on its underside.

The birds are often used for fishing in China and Japan.

In order to fish with cormorant

the fisherman goes out at night in a small boat.

He must carry with him a bright light.

He must also take with him a number of cormorant

each with a cord around its body and a loose metal ring around its neck.

The fisherman first puts the birds in the water

making sure to keep the strings in his hand.

At once the cormorants begin looking for fish.

When a cormorant catches a fish, the bird tries to swallow it.

However, the metal ring around its neck prevents this.

Because he cannot swallow the fish he catches

the cormorant stores them in the sack under its beach.

When the sacks are full, the fisherman pulls in his birds.

Opening their beaks,he reaches into the sacks and pulls out the fish.

  17. What is a cormorant?

  18. What is the passage mainly about?

  19. Why does the fisherman put a metal ring around a cormorant's neck?

  20. What can we infer from the passage?
