  Section A

1.W:You've heard my report. Are there any comments?

M:On the whole,I agree with what you said.

But your last point about putting on a play doesn't seem to be very practical.

How can we put on a play when we're so busy with our studies?

Q:What can be concluded from this conversation?

  2.M:I believe there's a parcel for me.

  W: Let me see...yes, here's your parcel.

But you'll have to pay duty on it.

Q: What does the woman mean?

3.M:I want to send this to the United States by air mail registered.

  How much will it be?

W:I'll have to weigh it first.

  It's a bit overweight.

  Let me see.

That'll be one yuan-ten for postage and fifty fen for registration.

Q.How much will the man pay?

4.M:Have you any of those bookmarks with different little paintings on them?

W:Sorry, but we're all out of them at the moment.

  They sell very fast.

Q: What did the man want to buy?

  5. M: Something smells good.

  Oh,you are preparing some noodle.

What are you having with the noodles?

W: Some cucumbers, a bit of pork and beef, tomatoes and eggplants.

Q: How many kinds of vegetables did the woman use?

6.W:Could you tell me where to have his matter settled?

  M: Let me see.

You might try the Personnel Section or the Liaison Office.

Oh,sorry, you'd better go to the Foreign Affairs Section

which is next to the Student Union on the second floor.

at the far end of the hall, on your right.

Q:Where should the woman go according to the man?

7.W:I hear that your son's working part-time at the department store.

M: Yes.He works Monday,Wednesday and Friday from 4 to 9, all day Saturday.

Q.Which days does the man's son not work?

8 M:Could you show me that once more if you are not busy?

  W: Of course.

Put the paper into the machine, set your margie

put your fingers on the key

  Now you're ready.

Q: What is the woman doing?

9.M:The taxi was total loss. Did you see it?

W:Yes.And to think that three women and two babies were in that terrible accident without being hurt.

Q: How many people were injured in the accident?

  10. W:I recently saw a film that was mad

from the story of a book I read the year before last.

M:Did you enjoy the film as much as you enjoyed the book?

Q:When did the woman read the book?

  Section B Passage One

We all know that it is possible for ordinary people to make their homes on the equator

although often they may feel uncomfortably hot there. Millions do it.

But as for the North Pole

we know that it is not only a dangerously cold plays

but that people like you and me would find it quite impossible to live there.

At the present time only the scientists and explorers can do so

  and they use special equipment.

Men have ben travelling acrosss and around the equator on wheel

on their feet or in ships for thousands of years

but only a few men with great difficulty and in very recent time

have ever crossed the ice to the North Pole.

So it may surprise you to learn that when travelling by air

it is really safer to fly over the North Pole than over the equator.

Of course, this is not true about landings in the polar region

(which passenger airplane do not make but the weather

if we are flying at a height of 5,000 meters above the Pole it is a delight.

At 4,000 meters and more above the earth you can alway

be sure that you will not see a cloud in the sky as far as the eye can reach.

In the tropics, on the other hand

you are not certain to keep clear of bad weather

even at such heights as 18,000 or 20,000 metres.

Aeroplane can't climb as high or as quickly in cold air as in warm.

  Nor can cloud

In practice, this is an advantage to the aeroplane

which is already at a good height when it reaches the polar region

and so does not need to clime

while at the same time cold air keeps the clouds down low.

  11. What can we learn about the polar region from the passage?

  12. Why is it a delight to fly at the Pole?

  13. On what condition can aeroplane climb quickly?

  Passage Two

A country's latitude, or distance from the equator

has an important effect on its climate.

In places located at low latitude

or near the equato like Ecuador and northern Brazil

the amount of sunshine changes the least during the year.

At mid-latitudes,in places like Japan or Argentina

there is more sunshine in the summer than in the winter.

The greatest change occurs at the highest latitude.

in places like northern Canada or Alaska.

In these places, the nights are very long for half the year

and the days are long during the other half.

At the North or South Pol sunlight lasts the longest during the summer.

But light and heat are the most intense at the equator.

Altitude and distance from the sea also affect climate.

The thin air in high mountain areas absorbs less of the sun's heat

than the thicker air at sea levee.

The daily changes in temperature also increase with distance from the sea.

Snow and rain are very important to climate.

Snow reflects as much as eighty or ninety percent of the heat from the sun

and makes the weather even colder

but a large forest area can reflect as little as five percent of the sun's heat

This makes the weather warmer. Of course,

the general effects of climate do not explain everything about the weather.

For example, both the driest places in the world

and the place with the most rainy days are located in Chill.

Calama,in the Atacama Desert had no rain for over 400 years.

But during the year 1916,it rained in Bahia Felix, Chile for 348 days.

  14. Where do the greatest changes of climates take place?

  15. Which of the following does not affect climate?

  16. Where are the driest places and the rainiest place located?

  Passage Three

Large modern cities are too big to control.

They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them.

City-dwellers are oboliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life.

They lost touch with the land and rhythm of nature.

It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existance in a large city

that you are barely conscious of the season.

A few flowers in a public park (if you have the time to visit it)

may remind you that it is spring or summer.

A few leaves clinging to the pavement may remind you that it is autumn.

Beyond that, what is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant.

All the simple good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium.

Tall buildings blot out the sun.

The traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere.

Even the distinction between day and night is lost.

The flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.

17.Which is not one of the reasons why city life is not perfectable?

18.Why is it not easy to see much difference between day and night?

19.WHat is highly esteemed in big cities according to the passage?

20.Which statement is not true according the passage?
